Program Highlights
- Since 1992 more than 1,000 students and teachers have participated
in study abroad programs, and over 600 CCDS families have hosted
a foreign student in their home.
- Our students participate in the following international exchange
and language immersion programs: School Year Abroad, Amigos de las Americas,
Nacel Open Door, Concordia Language Camps, and Putney Student Travel. These programs, and many others, allow our students to experience different cultures while practicing skills through homestays, language study, community service, and travel opportunities.
- We offer travel/study opportunities through sister school exchange
programs in Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, and Mexico.
- Country Day was the first independent school in North Carolina
to offer an International Baccalaureate diploma and now offers
a full range of IB courses.
- Country Day is the only independent day school in North Carolina with
a full-time English-as-a-Second-Language program.
- CCDS enrolls more than 120 international students from nearly 40 countries, comprising approximately 7 percent of our student
population.
- Through our Beyond our Borders assemblies, the school invites
high-level international visitors to CCDS. In the past decade,
we have welcomed to our campus more than 50 international guest
speakers including Mikhail Gorbachev, Shimon Peres, John Majors,
and Lech Walesa.
- Country Day is the seat of the French Honorary Consulate in
North Carolina.
- International families are assisted in their transition to a
new country and school and are encouraged to take part in the
International Parents' Group, which offers monthly programs.
- Country Day students and faculty regularly take part in community
events that forge greater understanding of other countries and
people. These include Model UN, foreign language luncheons through
the World Affairs Council of Charlotte, the World Citizen Award Dinner,
the IB Career Conference at UNC Charlotte, WorldQuest and WorldQuest Junior,
the Ambassadors Series, the Latin American Festival, the Festival
of India, the ECHO Foundation, and the Great Decisions
Lecture Series.
- Country Day is affiliated with Charlotte World Affairs Council, World View, and NC in the World.
- More than 30 seniors have taken part in international internships
with assistance from the International Studies office.
- CCDS students have earned scholarships through the Charlotte
World Affairs Council and Alliance Française.
- Each spring the International Studies Award is given to a CCDS
senior who has opened his or her mind and heart to learn about
other cultures and has shared this enthusiasm with others at CCDS.
